Corks do not “breathe”

This myth is spread so far and wide in the wine industry it’s hard for some to accept it as false. After bottling, the only oxygen a wine sees is the oxygen from within the cork itself. As a porous material much of the cork is saturated with air. As this cork is compressed in the bottle it eventually releases oxygen gradually over the next few years. However the cork is impermeable to atmospheric oxygen ingress. Yes, eventually atmospheric ingress may occur BETWEEN the cork and bottle neck as the cork loses structural integrity. But the cork itself does not breathe.

Also wine bottles can be stored upright. There is 100% humidity in the neck of the bottle which will maintain complete saturation of cork.
