I want to get my parents a bottle of wine for getting me to college. Can I get some help choosing a bottle?
So, my experience with wine is pretty much limited to boxes and cheap red wine mixed with coke (which actually is rather delicious). As a thank you present to my parents who are sending me to college, I wanted to blindside them with a gift I shouldn't be able to get them before I leave for the fall semester, with a bottle of wine for my mom and a bottle of whiskey for my dad.
I was looking specifically at red wines, and within a budget of about $60. Are there any wines that this sub could recommend for someone with a slightly limited budget, for a special occasion like this? I know that they'll probably say that they love anything I give them considering the circumstance but I want them to actually love it. To give you an idea of my parent's tastes, my mom usually only sticks to pinot noir, at least at restaurants, and my dad doesn't really care (whiskey on the other hand is a bit different).
I found a few that I thought might be good for this. Does anyone here have any experience with these wines?
Boss Block by Sheridan Vineyard 2014 ($50 at a 97 rating seems pretty good)
Unanime by Mascota Vineyard 2013 ($25 for 94)
Chateau Guiraud Sauternes 2003 ($40 for a 95, however the important thing for me is that it was made in the year I started school. Is it too risky to get a dessert wine?)
