Is use of the term ‘Meritage’ a regional California thing?

Hi r/wine! I've got a question. So, I work in the Washington state wine industry – currently in a tasting room. Recently, a group of well-heeled Californian wine enthusiasts showed up and described one of our Bordeaux blends as a 'Meritage'. This is a term that I've never once heard used up in these parts while at wine school or working in the industry, though I have read about the term. (Some artificial term Mondavi created or somesuch?)

My question to everyone – is use of the term 'Meritage' a California thing? And, does it happen to be falling out of favor as a way to describe a Bordeaux blend?

Big thanks for your insights!
