Questions for people who have become sommeliers in Canada or Toronto…
I'm 21 and currently considering this path as I've been around and tasted wine my whole life. I've paid to go to tastings and bought quite a few bottles, and I'm always interested in the tastes, bodies, tannins, etc, that each new glass brings (not even specific to wine as I love Scotch as well). I currently have a culinary diploma but I've deciding that being a cook isn't something I want to do any longer, however since I'm already experienced in the industry maybe going down a different avenue in the same industry is a good idea.
Just curious if a formal education is required, not suggested? Like as a cook having a diploma in culinary isn't necessary, I'm not sure if it's the same for becoming proficient in wine. There's a few courses at George Brown (Wines I & II, and the Wine Specialist Certificate) for becoming a wine sommelier. Have any of you taken them and started your career as such and/or become (more) successful?
